I’ll Pay Your Arrears Before December: President Ruto to SonySugar Farmers

President Ruto received by local leaders led by SonySugar Board Chairman Hon Jared Kopiyo during a visit to the Company on 8th October 2023

President William Ruto has assured farmers who delivered cane to South Nyanza Sugar Company that the 800 million arrears owed to them by the government-owned miller will be paid by the treasury before December 2023.

The president gave the assurance during his visit to the Company yesterday 8th October 2023. SonySugar was among the destinations he visited during the four-day working tour of the Nyanza region. He also said that the 1.1 billion salary arrears accrued by the employees over the last three years will be settled. The President emphasized the government's commitment to supporting the sector's revival and alleviating the financial burden on key stakeholders. In a bid to revamp the sugar sector, the President announced that state-owned mills will be put under a lease-and-operate model to ensure competitiveness and resilience in the face of market challenges.

The local leaders led by Migori Governor, Ochilo Ayacko thanked the President for the bold move to streamline the sub-sector. SonySugar board chairman Hon. Jared Kopiyo hosted the president.
