Hon. Jared Kopiyo, former chairman of the Board of Directors shakes hands with the Managing Director and Founder of Busia Sugar Ltd, Mr. Ali Taib, at SonySugar Company 2025 Ltd during the takeover on 10th May, 2025 in Awendo.

The founder and Managing Director of Busia Sugar Ltd, Mr Ali Ahmed Taib, today officially took over the ownership of South Nyanza Sugar Company Limited at a handing over ceremony held at SonySugar Boardroom in Awendo.

Busia Sugar won the international tender floated by the National Government in February 2025. SonySugar will now be operated by Busia Sugar for the next 30 years, according to the lease agreement.

The government has in the meantime, appointed a committee to oversee a smooth transition of the four sugar companies (Nzoia, taken over by West Kenya , Muhoroni taken over by West Valley, Chemelil, taken over by Kibos Sugar, and SonySugar leased out to Busia Sugar) whose mandate will last for the next 12 months. The membership of the transition committee comprises the current managing directors, officials from the National Treasury, Ministry of Agriculture, workers union leadership and the leadership of the leasing companies.

“The leasing is a long term strategic intervention by the government to revamp and streamline the sugar industry in Kenya,” said Mr. Timothy Ogwang, the representative of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, adding that, “In five years, Kenya should be able to export sugar to Comesa region and beyong and envisioned by His Excellency the President.”

Speaking at the function, Mr Taib described the takeover as a monumental milestone for his business, promising to pay for the cane delivered to the factory in one week. The ceremony was conducted by the chairman of the board of directors, Hon Jared Kopiyo and Managing Director Martine Dima, who inducted the new team into the crucial sections of the core business. Also present was Ms Jane Pamela Odhiambo, former Managing Director of SonySugar, who is also a high ranking member of Busia Sugar management.
